The Swiss Food Composition Database contains information on the composition of foods that are available in Switzerland. The database is operated by the Federal Food Safety and Veterinary Office FSVO. The Swiss Society for Nutrition SSN manages the contents and the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich ETH provides the required software.
The FSVO provides the data free of charge to all interested parties. The data may be used, also for commercial purposes, (e.g. integration into food composition calculation software or nutrition diary-app) and scientific purposes, subject to acknowledgment of the source.
The current version of the Swiss Food Composition Database (V5.3) contains approximately 10‘600 foods that have been classified into 19 main and 105 sub categories.
For all the foods contained in the database, complete information is presented on the macronutrients (carbohydrates, proteins, fats) as well as for water content, alcohol content and energy content. In addition, the content of dietary fibres and micronutrients (vitamins, minerals) as well as the composition of the fats (saturated, mono-unsaturated, poly-unsaturated) are listed for the majority of generic foods. In the case of branded products, however, the only information available is that provided or published by the manufacturer (e.g. on packaging or websites).
The database is available in English, German, French and Italian. It is also available in book form and can be obtained from the Swiss Society of Nutrition SSN.
